Gutter repair in Winchester and Frederick County, VA
One dripping corner or a run bent by a branch doesn't always call for new gutters. A lot of problems can be fixed.
Gutter repair is the work that keeps an existing system doing its job: resealing joints, adding or swapping hangers, re-pitching a run, replacing a bent section or putting back a gutter that has come off the house. An experienced installer can usually tell in one visit whether a repair will hold or whether it's time to replace.
What breaks most often?
- Leaky corners and end caps. Sealant dries out and cracks with age and freeze-thaw. Joints can be cleaned and resealed, and failed miters replaced.
- Sagging runs. Usually loose or widely spaced hangers, or the weight of wet leaves and standing water. New hidden hangers into solid wood fix most sags.
- Gutters leaning off the house. Often caused by rotted fascia. The wood has to be repaired before any fastener will hold.
- Standing water. The run has lost its slope and needs to be re-hung.
- Winter damage. Snow sliding off the roof and ice building up in a clogged gutter can bend hangers and pull whole sections down.
- Downspouts apart at the elbows. Loose straps and joints drop roof water right against the foundation.
What should I do if a storm tore a gutter loose?
- Keep everyone clear of any hanging piece, and move cars out of the driveway below it.
- Stay off the ladder if anything is near power lines.
- Take photos of the damage and any fallen limbs for your insurance company.
- Call. An installer can secure or remove the loose section and quote the repair.
Repair or replace?
Repair makes sense when the problem is limited to a few joints, some hangers or one damaged run and the rest of the system is solid. Replacement is usually smarter when leaks keep showing up at many seams, the metal is rusted through or cracked, the gutters are too small for the roof, or you're about to add guards and want them on something that will last.
Why does a clean gutter still overflow?
The usual causes are too few downspouts, a clog lower down in a downspout or buried drain, a run pitched the wrong way, or a gutter that's simply undersized for the roof above it. Roof valleys that send two slopes into one corner are the classic trouble spot. A splash diverter at the corner, an added downspout or a larger gutter usually fixes it.
What affects the cost of a repair?
- What failed. Resealing a corner takes less time than re-hanging a whole side.
- Wood damage. Rotted fascia must be replaced first.
- Height and access.
- Matching. Older gutter profiles and colors can be hard to find.
We don't quote prices. The installer sets a price after measuring each gutter run, counting downspouts and looking at the roof's height and pitch, so a number given over the phone would only be a guess.

Common questions
Does homeowners insurance cover gutter damage?
Sometimes, when a covered event like a falling tree or windstorm causes it. Wear and tear usually isn't covered. Check with your insurer.
Can I reseal a leaky gutter seam myself?
Gutter sealant on a clean, dry joint can work for a while. If joints keep failing, the run may need new end caps, new corners or replacement.
