Gutter guards in Stephens City, Virginia
Guards, repairs and new gutters for Stephens City homes, from the old town center on Main Street to the subdivisions around it.
Stephens City is an incorporated town in southern Frederick County, about 5 miles south of Winchester where Routes 11 and 277 meet. It had 2,016 residents in 2020. The General Assembly chartered it as Stephensburgh on October 12, 1758, which makes it the second-oldest town in the Shenandoah Valley after Winchester. It was also called Newtown before taking its present name in 1880.
What's different about gutters on older Stephens City homes?
About 65 acres of the town center are listed on the National Register as the Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District, with 18th-century buildings, older homes, churches and cemeteries. Houses that old have often been through several sets of gutters, and the fascia behind them may have years of paint over soft spots. Have the installer check the wood before hanging anything new, and ask about profiles that suit an older facade.
And the newer neighborhoods?
Subdivisions that grew up around town tend to have builder-installed 5-inch gutters with the fewest downspouts the job allowed. On big roofs with valleys, those corners overflow in heavy summer storms. Adding a downspout or a valley diverter often solves it without replacing the whole system.
